Educational Activities

Members of the St. Luke’s Gastroenterology Fellowship participate in many educational opportunities covering the broad field of gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreaticobiliary diseases. Training is supplemented with bi-weekly and monthly conferences.

Fellows Conference

Associate Program Director, Dr. Kimberly Chaput, leads fellows through this annual didactic series covering the core curriculum of gastroenterology. It will include a weekly summer lecture series followed by monthly lectures the rest of the year.

Journal Club

Each month, notable journal articles are presented by fellows for discussion and in-depth analysis. This evidence-based, critical review serves to familiarize fellows with the medical literature relevant to gastroenterology as well as electronic search capabilities. Assistant Clinical Professor Dr. Berhanu Geme guides fellows through this interactive, educational experience.

Mortality and Morbidity Conference

Fellows analyze adverse events and means to improve patient outcomes, safety, and quality of care. Our primary interventional endoscopist, Dr. Ayaz Matin, will lead these important case based discussions.

GI Pathology Conference

Our GI pathologist (Dr. Lisa Stoll) meets with fellows and faculty to review pertinent interesting slides from the last two weeks. She also reviews classic teaching slides with fellows to expose them to the important features of gastrointestinal and liver pathology.

Grand Rounds

Once a month, fellows and faculty meet for Grand Rounds. Two fellows will each present a case for discussion followed by a brief review of the topic and relevant literature. Once every 3 months, we will invite a national expert to hear the fellows’ cases and then speak on a relevant topic.

Foregut conference

This interdisciplinary conference involves the bariatric surgery team, gastroenterologist/motility team, ENT physicians, and thoracic and surgery team with the goal to discuss management of complex foregut disorders such as esophageal dysmotility, laryngopharyngeal reflux, refractory reflux, post gastric bypass reflux, and complex hernia surgeries.

Gastroenterology fellows are contributing members of the GI performance improvement committee, medical ethics committee, and other professional committees.

The Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at St. Luke’s University Health Network incorporates the gastroenterology core curriculum in preparation for the ABIM Board Examination in Gastroenterology. Our training program meets guidelines set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
